The Kevin Walsh Collection Early Flight

 

During the 1900s thousands of spectators flocked to the many air shows to see their first actual aircraft. In 1909 Lord Northcliffe owner of the Daily Mail offered £1000 for the first Aircraft to cross. The English Channel which was a huge amount of money in those days. Louis Bleriot won the prize taking 36 minutes and 30 seconds to make the flight in his Type XI monoplane, Bleriot became world famous in his day. The painting shows Bleriot in his aircraft giving a display at one of the many popular air shows at the time.
