I was one of the first contemporary photographers to shoot Mitchell falls, back in the 1980’s. At that time, very few people knew about the rough bush track leading down to the falls. This spectacular waterfall can be difficult to photograph. The grandeur of the scene can be so overwhelming, that you forget to create the third dimension in your image to give people a sense of the scale. Most people photograph it around midday, so the light in the gorge is even. But I determined to come up with a new angle to convey the presence of this amazing place. This shot was taken late one afternoon, with the sun’s last rays lighting up the distant escarpment and a full moon rising overhead.
